As a child I always struggled with memory. I was slightly above average when it came to problem solving but when it came to mugging up, I felt like having brain cancer.
Swear words bombarded inside my head whenever I tried to memorise those annoying historical events or some pathetic and weird formula. People’s names were another headache!
I will try to teach you something which has helped me a lot in memorising some of the most ridiculous things ever. It will be helpful to memorise key events, names of people or any formula.
So without further adieu, let's begin with an exercise.
You have got 30 seconds to memorise these 15 random objects in the sequence mentioned. Which means when you recall, they should be in the same order. Give it a try.

- Depression
- Milk
- Table

- Dog
- Notebook
- Girlfriend

Someone with a horrible memory as mine will struggle a lot. They won't make it past item number 7 which was in my case😂
Worry not! It is very common.
Let us try something else.
Now we shall apply something call “Linking theory” which will help was recall things much much better.
What we have to do is link the first object to the second, the second to the third and so on. But…

Sounds pretty weird right?
Okay let me help you out. Try to visualise this story that I am going to tell you now. Let your mind wander freely and imagine it!
“ I was expecting a call late in the night when my Mobile Phone suddenly rang, I picked up the call and to my utter horror I heard an elephant trumpet on the other side.
The sound was unusual and sad, as if the poor creature was in Depression, when asked, he said that Milk was flowing incessantly from its trunk and it wouldn't stop!
He said that it has been flowing for years which he timed using his Table clock. When asked how it happened, he told that he was bitten by a Dog which was following him from some days and noting his movements in a Notebook. Then the elephant’s girlfriend in her pink shoes started crying as well. She was annoyed at me and said you don't understand us, “You know nothing Jon Snow”, a dramatic pause followed!
Things took an unexpected turn as the elephant saw a Great white shark Swimming in the puddle of the milk that came out from his trunk. The shark started doing Tap dance on the puddle to cheer the couple up. He held a small Ring between it's tiny fins and gave it to the elephant and asked him to propose to his girlfriend😂 and they started playing Football happily ever after”
A pretty ridiculous story indeed. Even Christopher Nolan would have a heart attack after reading this script. 😂
So this the story, you need to make your own when you try to memorise something sequentially.
It demands creativity no doubt! Which is a skill.
The idea is to visualise each and every scene. If you fail to do it, I am afraid it ain’t gonna work.
Now try recalling the entire sequence of words again by just remembering the story, I bet you did much better this time!
